Hydrostone Therapy
Utilizing stones in healing is an ancient practice by many indigenous peoples around the world. Some Native American tribes had medicine men and women that would use the stones as a part of their healing ceremonies. The use of the stones, and the ceremonies, are held very sacred and are not common knowledge. So while many people like to think that the hydrostone massage is an ancient Native American technique, that is simply not the case. Being part Newe (Shoshone), I can tell you that we honor the stones as a part of beautiful Mother Earth, as a blessing from Creator, and we use them with the understanding that they are to be respected, honored, and loved... as with all of nature.
The Chinese were using stones over 4,000 years ago to work along the meridians, bringing wellness to the organs and muscles. The healer would heat the stone and press it into acu-points to balance the chi (energy) in the body and detoxify the organs. |
Cleopatra, in Egypt, believed that hot stone massages gave her powers of seduction and beauty. Warriors in Mongolia would rub hot stones from the fire over their bodies before battle, finding that it reduced fears and apprehensions. Sumo Wrestlers in Japan placed hot stones in their kimono saches to aid with digestion. The Myans used it in conjunction with cold stones, to create a visceral detox, and aid in reproductive issues. So many cultures, throughout time, have used these methods... and for good reason.
The energy the stones carry is a negative charge, acting like a magnet to draw out and neutralize energies from deep within the body. The weight of the stones causes tissues to almost instantly relax, the warmth of them melting through adhered fascia and bound colloids, through an action called thixotropy, or melting due to heat. If you tap stones together over areas of injury or dense tissue it will create an electrical charge in the tissue, called a piezoelectric effect, which results in repair and healing. This is extremely effective with scar tissue as it increases collagen production by stimulating fibroblast function and it also attracts new cells to the site. There are many ways to use them, from multiple cultures throughout time, for different effects. I blend them a bit, always utilizing the bodies natural relaxation response to the stones, aiding me in releasing deeper and deeper tissues with ease.
